Everything you need to know to get your kid started in kayaking
How to Choose a Kayak Trailer
Need a kayak trailer? Wondering what kayak trailer you should buy? Use the charts below to evaluate your needs and see recommendations for the best kayak trailer for you.
How many kayaks do you need your kayak trailer to carry?
You can get a trailer that carries only 1 kayak, 2 kayaks, 2-4 kayaks, or a trailer that carries many kayaks.
Do you need a lightweight trailer or will traditional galvanized steel be fine?
Aluminum is lightweight, durable and rust-resistant, but it is the most expensive option. Steel will rust if you will be using your kayaks in salt water unless it is galvanized steel. Steel trailers will be heavier but cheaper. Many prefer aluminum if they can afford it because it's easier to move your trailer and easier to pull with smaller vehicles. If you can afford it and are using a smaller vehicle, I recommend aluminum, but if you are just looking for the cheapest trailer and salt water and weight are not an issue, a steel kayak trailer will be fine. Galvanized steel kayak trailers are the middle-ground and best of both worlds for most families in my opinion.
Choosing a Kayak Trailer
These kayak trailers are all highly rated. I prefer Galvanized Steel or Galvanized Steel/aluminum kayak combination trailers, but use the chart to choose the best trailer recommendations for your needs. As you will see, Malone is my favorite kayak trailer company hands-down. They make Eco Light (aluminum hybrid), Micro Sport (Best All-around for most), and Mega Sport (Heavy Duty Upgrades) trailer lines, each with a low-bed option, and 1, 2 or 4 boat capacity options.
My favorite Kayak trailer is the Malone Auto Racks Micro Sport 4-Boat Fold Away Trailer
I'm not the only one apparently, as it gets an amazing 4.9 stars in reviews. If you want to read more about it I wrote about it here: Easiest Kayak Trailer

Almost six years ago we moved into a little New England house with a river in the backyard and quickly discovered the joy of kayaking kids.
